Yesterday was Kindergarten Roundup – the designated “first day” of registration for incoming Kindergartners for the fall. Needless to say, The Boy was a bundle of excitement. The Momma was not prepared. Mentally – yes. Logistically – no. I had to scramble at the last minute to put my hands on his birth certificate and social security card. Other documents including health records and proof of residency were gathered and off we went to “big kid school.”
We didn’t plan it to happen this way – but we ended up at a table filled with parents from our church who were there doing the same for their 5 (or nearly 5) year olds. The best part was when The Boy’s good friend, The Neighbor Kid showed up. This is the same kid that is in The Boy’s class at preschool AND the same classes at church AND just so happens to live across the street from us (that part we had no clue about until the day we moved in this past winter).
The kids were put in small groups and given tours of the kindergarten classrooms and other main parts of the school while the parent’s stayed behind in the cafeteria to complete the enrollment forms. As I led The Boy up to his group leader, he looked up at me with his humongous blue eyes (fearful for the first time I’ve seen in in YEARS) and asked me if I would still be here in the lunchwoom (gotta love the lisp that won’t go away) when he returned. “Yes, Bubba, Momma will be right here. I’m not going anywhere.” Huge emphasis on the “anywhere” for his benefit.
So while they trotted off, the lights were dimmed and we were subjected to a <strike>horribly boring</strike> wonderful slide show presentation on the school, it’s staff and facilities. Since I’ve had a child at this school for 4 years, I didn’t learn anything new and spent the time scribbling on official documents in the darkened room.
I finished up our paperwork early and went roaming the hallways trying to locate The Boy. I found his group outside the music room and he refused to go with me. He told me “go back to the lunchwoom and wait fo me.”
Fine. My Boy is going to be just fine.
